Best steel frame available today?

I have been following this thread with interest as I have similar requirements to Thorpie for a steel hardtail.
So I have just called both Woodrup's and Bob Jackson's in Leeds about an 853 framed mountain bike, both were in the region of £550 to £600, but with Jackson's they were mentioning a 5 - 6 month waiting list!
It seems to compare quite nicely with the off the shelf bikes, as well as being relatively local and is significantly cheaper than Curtis. (Although the Curtis does look quite good!)

Ah, I was going to suggest something from the lush Niner range but still, any good custom builder ( who listens! ) will do you proud.

I had a Kinesis Decade in the shop last week and it is a very nice frame with good gear/SS options. The first batch of Prestige were produced with the name 'Virtue' which they can no longer use as Felt moaned about copyright. It is not mega light but one of these would be worth a punt in terms of something that will be very limited.

Do you know how many 'Virtues' were made before the recall? Or did they just repaint the batch? Were they the same colour schemes as available now - black and green?

Don't forget that Arthur Caygill in Richmond, N. Yorks also do bespoke frames, although Richard Kent (their old frame builder) has since left the company mind you.

IMHO the Rock Lobster 853 is very underated. Worth seeing in the flesh also, as the the attention to detail is very good also. Great kit too if buying as a full bike.
