Am looking to splash out on a new road bike, but am new to the 'genre' and Evans Cycles aside im not really sure where to look for a good selection.

Any recommendations on shops? (and bikes!)

Looking to spend up to £1500 and possibly bag a 2010 season bargain.
Keen on 'bike of the year' Cannondale Six, but not convinced carbon fibre is the way to go as a heavy rider (?)

There is a highly recommended shop near Box Hill Surrey. But can't remember the name. Started with a D. I cycled past it yesterday  Hopefully some one will know it

Liphook Cycles , down the A3, in , er, Liphook are an excellent old fashioned bike shop, crammed to the rafters with all manner of bikes, but they specialise in road stuff. Trevor, the owner, has been a roadie for 30 years +, and he and the staff are all big blokes, so should be able to recommend something appropriate.

I bought my road bike from Berkshire Bikes:

http://www.berkshirebikes.com/

They were the cheapest place in the UK by a huge margin on the Giant road bikes. They gave my wife a discount because they couldn't get her bike within a fortnight and were really helpful when I needed to return a Kona frame under warranty.Thier stock is quite low though, so if you find the bike you like and know the size you want, give them a ring and see what they can do on price.

Dauphin Sport.

Try Sigma Sport in Kingston. Good lads.

Or DeVer.

It's a proper, old school, independent bike shop that does a load of stuff for the local cycling community and should be supported.

Sort of out of the way from your stated areas, but Maurice Burton, the owner is brilliant - an ex pro rider and full of great stories, ask him about the time Eddy Merckx asked him to let him (Eddy) win a track race.

That's the shop. Sigma guy i met was from the old days and remembered Trimble's :D

No longer Dauphin Sport, the old Tony Mills shop. Now Cycles Dauphin. I used to go to DS in the 1980s and have only once been to CD - had about as much atmosphere as a deserted pub on the moon!

I'd recommend Cycle Care in Wycombe. Owned and staffed by helpful racing guys.

Forget Evans - since Gary Smith (SWRC) sold it out to a corporate entity, it's gone downhill faster than a tandem with Dura Ace AX brakes! 8)
