Bending mech hangers back

I'm sure it will be fine. Ideally you should heat the steel before you bend it into shape and the quench it after, but that would ruin the paintwork.

Just once should be fine, if it shows a weakness afterwards think about getting it done properly.

Oh and breakaway bolts.

takes alot to snap one, as long as you don't do it too many times it'll be fine but worst ever case would be trip a frame builder.

link is the www in the blue line thing below this box.

if you google ga cycles on images it'll find a bunch of us racing. 18th at ssmm sport cat (4th vets?) ,4th overall transwales '06 for Tony green and he was 16th this year trans scotland and 80th ish in the trans africa (with the sh*ts! ), we get in cycling weekly fot tt's and cross aswel, gary won wessex league (vets) last year, looks good for this year aswell.

i just ride for fun! and hold a spanner for the races. :D

Jonny,

I don't think it's bad, i kind of like the lo tech ness of it. Worked in an outdoor shop that was like that. The antidote to Snow and Rock. As good as they are, we were cooler.

Reassuring words though, thanks.

no probs, so where's the prayer meet gonna be then? we could go to a forest somewhere and spill the sap of a tree in sacrifice! kill chickens etc!

i'll bring my lucky rabbits foot!

not lucky for the rabbit though!!  poor limping bast*rd!

I know GA Cycles. Haven't been there this century, mind, but they were a great outfit back when I was at university - very friendly and knowledgeable!

My "on the trail" method for fixing this is to leave the mech on, stick a long allen key in the mech bolt and just bend it back until it's hanging straight. A trip to the shop later to get it aligned properly is worthwhile though.

Straighten it

Don't think the Park alignment tools are that dear, but I have always got away with said long allen key and a bit of humpty. I always use an ally breakaway bolt now though! lot safer I have a couple spare if you want? A polished ally OnZa one and a nice Purple SRP one.

It will be ok

Hey WU-TANGLED, let the LBS do this job for you and it will be fine...

A professional will bend it back in as few moves as possible so not to weaken the metal

If it was an alloy frame id be worried but steel as got a certain degree of flexibility in it before going soft..

The MARIN frames Scant mentioned had really soft hangers if i remember, prone to bending!

Thanks guys. Fingers crossed for tomorrow morning.

Wold, yeah, may well need a brreakaway bolt. Never used them as have had replaceable hangers or 6/4 ti ones for years now and haven't felt the need.

Do you screw it into the dropout and then the mech into it then?

Brake away

No its just a 6061 aluminium standard patterned mech bolt. that replaces the steel ones. They have three grooves machined into them, thereby are designed to snap when You hit something hard. They are still pretty strong and you will save a whole heap of weight too, if your that way inclined.
There is a knack to fitting them, which I have mastered over the years and it takes me about 20 seconds to swap over. I have seen folks struggle for 20 minutes with blood dripping from their finger tips and broken nails only to give up, usually accompanied by slinging the mech at a great rate of knots. You need very strong fingers or the right technique with a good broad nosed pair of pliers or pipe wrench.
I can do it for you, if you wanted to mail the mech if your at all worried?
