Hi

Well my husbands 1992 Arthur Caygill bike may have died.

What is happening is the bottom bracket cup on the drive side spins in the bb shell of the frame and does not unscrew. I assume that the threads of bb shell have gone, if so, is there the possibility of rethreading the shell.

Thanks

Alison

Assuming you're taking about a loose ball BB, then if you've got all the other parts out you should be able to cut the cup out with some carfeul hacksaw work, or a dremel. once you have it out, you'll be able to see if it's the frame or BB threads that are stripped. If it is the frame, then retapping might be an option, but there are several reasonably priced threadless BBs available that should work. I think one make is YST, I can't remember the others.

No it is not loose ball BB it's actually Octalink, Sacrilege I know but it is a retro frame with non retro parts on it

Well the only option might be drilling it out... I recently had to do this to a campy record BB that was stuck in a frame and had the splines destroyed. Took me two hours of careful drilling, filing, and sawing, but finally it came out with only very minimal (and unimportant) damage to the frame.

Good luck!
