I thought I'd had this hanging around in the shed for a while, but just discovered I was actually given it at the end of 2011!!
This bike turned out to be a 1954 Claud Butler Jubilee, but one that looked like it had over celebrated a few Jubilees. All its original components have been replaced over the years and the replacements had also reached a pretty sad state by the time I got it. The forks had a slight bend from too many short cuts up kerbs and the frame had been stripped and painted with a mettalic blue rattle can aerosol.
The photos by the previous owner actually do it to much justice!
The bike had been bought new by the owners father and although it must have racked up quite a few miles over the years, its also nice to see it had been well used.
I had some parts for an original rebuild and aquired a few suitable ones as I found them. Unfortuntely, some of these parts ended up getting used on other rebuilds which is why this has taken 4 years to see the light of day again. I decided to change the plan and have it period spec rather than original spec to get it back on the road.
I had some original but tired nickel plate Claud Butler forks so when the bike was stripped for painting the forks were swapped. Next came a decent wheelset, some Super Champion rims with a BH large flange front hub and a 1951 Sturmey 4 speed FM hub. The hub had very sticky shifting so had to be stripped and cleaned of its 60+ year old oil.
