I think it's one of those universal unwritten laws of puddings, in much the same way that a McVitie's Jamaican Ginger Cake refuses to be separated from its paper wrapper.

Remove the foil by holding the cheesecake in the middle of the underside.Much like a waiter holding a tray.
Peel the foil from around it and tear off as you get to the bit you are supporting it by.
Slide onto a plate and cut in half to access the last bit of foil
