You can choose to vote for only one candidate if you want to.

It took someone on here to make that point for me to realise you could and is one of the reasons I didn't mind so much voting yes..

Not that it made much difference but perhaps enough folk voted yes that a dissatisfaction with FPTP will be noted and a push for PR may gain some momentum for some time in the future...

Ultimately decisions need to be made, if enough people vote BNP but they don't get a majority or the highest number of votes in any one constituency, how would they have their voice?

I favour PR in some ways, but it doesn't really work with a system of constituencies and MPs.

There needs to be a longer and fuller debate to find a system that would genuinely be more fair.

I quite like the idea of AV+ - you keep constituencies, but have fewer of them, and elect MPs in the usual way. Then the spare places are filled by more MPs who don't represent constituencies but balance up the numbers so the chamber is proportional to votes cast naturally.

It's either best of both worlds or a hideous mongrel, but it doesn't seem completely mental to me.

All moot, of course, since it sounds like it'll be a resounding "no" in the referendum and therefore any possibility of electoral reform gone for years.

The problem I see with that is that these MPs without portfolio will be party stooges, rather than accountable to their constituents.

It would make as much sense to have a virtual standing vote based on the actual votes, to recognise the proportion of the national vote achieved at election and weighting the result accordingly. That would also be rather cheaper!

All votes should be secret as well, getting rid of the whips would make for a much more democratic parliament. There would be problems there too, with less transparency in a time where more is being demanded.

I have always had issues with the whips and towing-the-party-line. MP's should be allowed to make up their own mind and vote anonymously. If you don't know a record is kept how an MP votes, either for or against a decision.

Well the AV vote looks like it's doomed by all accounts, something like a 70/30 ratio in favour of no.

I also had no idea that you could only tick one box if you wanted to, perhaps the Yes campaign would have garnered more votes if they made this clear?

well if 70% of the people who care enough to vote about it say no, then that sounds fair enough to me.
