Purchased and received this recently. However I could be wrong, but something doesn't sit right with me. The clamp mechanism and base looks to me to be a proper Syncros, but the post it's attached to doesn't. It has a very shiny chrome finish to it. As well, the walls have varying oval thickness. Has anyone owned, seen or heard of Syncros post being like this? Perhaps a more modern, non-retro product?

it certainly looks right (or to re-phrase it, it looks pretty much the same as mine) - however i've not looked up inside mine to see if its ovalised or plain gauge internally.

if my recent crank query was anything to go by its not worth emailing them either because they simply don't know anything about past products since the latest buyout. (or that was the nicely worded excuse anyway!)

The bottom of my easton post looks like that, thought it looked like that due to the way they had cut back into the post.

Just measured my post and yes its thinner at the sides 1.1mm than the front and back of it 2.2mm

thats definately different to my '93 syncros post. looking up it, it is straight gauge all the way and the clamp on yours looks different somehow. it could be a modern version??

The silver post was a cheaper version, not as strong and made from the 6061-T6 tubing not he 7xxx tubing. often seen as OEM on lower rocky bikes in the pictures, this was in the early 90's

That post top looks the later style ? with single sticker going sideways.
The top could of course not be original as that's the first few years of the 90's
After that I do not know and never had one.

EDIT :
Also no minimum insertion marks 'band' around it and length a touch too long for 330 ?
Possible a cuy down and shaped 400mm ?

There are modern post using that similar style and are oval though.

I tend to steer well clear of Syncros posts so I've not looked up one (matron), but my Thomson is oval like that so maybe a modern thing. The clamp looks a bit more substantial than older ones I've seen too, more overlap or a longer butted section, which is good!

Fairly certain Fluffer's right about it being cut down though, about 97% sure...

i don't think it's been cut down. i'm more concerned about the oval wall thickness, that and the fact there's the normal two holes at the bottom are missing, but i've seen some on occasion without.

it does have the post size/length stamped and assume that this would be the minimum insertion. from what i recall, and i could be wrong, but most of the posts i've come across, the markings are vertical with the post?

i need to have a good look at the other Syncros posts I have in my position and do a better comparison.

The top of the clamp is early, 1992 or earlier. The bottom is 2nd gen, post 1990 so this is from 1991/1992. Earlier posts had no holes at the bottom and had the very marked step lower down the head on the thinner posts than the later ones.

I would almost take bets that the post used to be black but someone stripped it and polished it.

I think this is the order....

I was thinking it was the 'mark 4' in the 6061-T6 format (ignoring the bindings). On the top silver cradle part of the actual post the part just above the black is slightly longer than in the earlier version.
circa '99 ?

Here's the 6061 I mean

note no in this model

Oval I don't know, but these where considerably heavier posts at 280g mark, not the 230g mark
