I have these Shimano DX brake pads, are they any good or would I be better off fitting Kool Stop?

Shimano where never great imho and after all these years will be worse still.

The Shimano ones tended to be awfully abrasive and eat rims faster than any other brand.
that depended on which ones, they had various grades depending on the target audience. cheaper ones lasted longer as generally people wouldn't change them often or didnt want to.
the top end like xtr grade on the other hand did the opposite and wore down quick but where good if not expensive brake blocks.
aftermarket blocks have the benefit of not having to look after Joe bloggs dad who felt like buying a general MTB and could target performance users.

saying that the chunky shimano blocks above where a bit naff and of most importance are heavy.

give them a sanding, set the arms properly and you'll be fine.

He speaketh the truth, those pads should be perfectly adequate, only fit Koolstop pads if you think you need a performace increase or simply must have new pads. Otherwise wear those down and then buy the Koolstops. :)
