If you will excuse the irony of me offering advice on finding employment ;)...

As someone who moved from an engineering and manufacturing background into IT, I had serious disadvantages with competition from younger candidates with more formal qualifications. Fortunately the IT industry, even more than most, is obsessed with jargon and buzzwords. When the opportunity arises, just fit the correct jargon into the relevant hole and they will welcome you as a fellow geek. (a bit like RB really, conform and your in. ;))

For my own first interview as a IT support consultant I prepared myself by checking out on the most common support issues that arose. At that time, pre plug and play and pre broadband this was device driver conflicts and setting up dial up networking. Armed with an intimate understanding of these specifics I at least had areas of complete confidence I could use to convey my enthusiasm for and understanding of the subject. ;)

Bear in mind that they will have an alloted time allowed for the interview. The more of it you can fill, with relevant and knowledgeable answers to their questions, the less time they have to spring surprises and set traps.

Remember that corporate recruitment techniques are primarily based on whatever USA business guru is currently in the ascendancy. That basically means it's based on bull. Just gently take control of the interview and beat them at their own game.

Good luck.

Good luck LGF.

Put something interesting in your application, particularly in the personal statement at the start of your CV, it doesn't have to be work related, just memorable. When I've sifted CVs and applications in the past the memorable ones always stick in my mind, the ones that are purely academic and experienced based all merge in to one.

Don't make anything yp, you will become unstuck.

My top tip is at the interview stage. If they offer you a glass of water always accept, even if you're not thirsty. When they ask you a question that you need a moment to consider, rather than just sit there and go errrrrrrrrrr, take a slow sip of water and consider you're response whilst doing so.

I'd need a big glass...

remember an interview is a 2 way thing. They will be looking to see if you fit their requirements and organisation. You should be looking whether the job, organisation and culture fits what you want. There may be more of them and its on their territory, but keep in mind its equal.
Ask relevant questions - technical or how they work as the interview progresses so that it feels more like a chat rather than them grilling you with a 2 minute "have you any questions" at the end..... and despite what some might say, make sure you leave knowing salary, hours, holidays etc. This should be your final parting question if it hasnt been mentioned up till then, and should be asked in a friendly/cheeky manner. At the end of the day, its why we all go to work.

The power of positive thinking is way undervalued, visualizes getting offered the job, doing the job, being great in the job, prepare well and have no doubts, you are the best candidate and it's a given that the job will be yours (if you want it)- your a tiger go get them LGF.

good luck with it,last job interview i had they told me i was too qualified! i did not get the job, just as well cos i would have been surrounded by a bunch of twits by the sound of it.

Out of practice. +as you get older you feel more and more uncomfortable handing descisions in your life to others.

The Job interview is the ultimate 'handing over of the keys' as it is something that can influenc your whole life, and you let someone else decide!

Fair play for doing it, go for it!

Also, if you were not nervous enough you either a) don't really want the job or b) are so over qualified you should really be applying for a more senior position!

Good Luck!
