Apollo, Emelle, Universal etc. .

Carrera's only problem was Halfords, they were sold there before the revamp from blue logos to orange and black.

Emmelle Dolomite was cool (when I was 13), I wanted one, that sort of pink & white marble effect IIRC. 8)

I would still have a 531 Carrera road bike with 105sc , the yellow and grey one if anyone remembers.

I think some of the Carrera bikes are fine low to mid end stuff.

Apollo are clearly below this.

I have a hack bike, bought it a year or 2 back (2nd hand). I wanted a bike I could use for cycling around (town centre, visiting hospital) that I could lock up and leave, without worrying about.

I did think about getting something retro or a fairly good bike, worth updating bits on. And in some cases, I regret spending the £50 I spent on it to buy it (it's some crappy Apollo hybrid thing, on the plus side, has full length mudguards) - thinking about some of the stuff I see getting sold on here.

But here's the thing - I wanted I bike I could use to get around on, that I'd be happy to lock-up outside, that I wouldn't be bothered about if it got nicked. So once I took off some of the kit I put on it when I bought it, I've got exactly that - I bike I can use but I don't really care about, and wouldn't really care less if somebody nicked it.

If I'd bought something half decent, or some retro bike, and I started investing or caring about it by upgrading bits, then I'd start to care, and woldn't then have what I wanted - a bike to use for pootling around locally, that it doesn't matter if somebody nicks.

Moral: sometimes there's a good side to crappy bikes.

i once had an apollo for the mile from the station to my university. i used to lock it with one of those chain combination locks you could pick by ear.

i came back to it one morning and someone had stolen it.

the lock that is.

I have one, Carrera Monza - got it for £5 on ebay. V good condition with white 105 bits and mighty biopace chainrings - replaced the inner tubes and put on a decent saddle I had lying around to replace a gel filled monstrosity.
Does everything I want anyway.
