Seriously though, my Dad had a white S2 many years ago, it was an awesome car, it did have it's problems, mainly because we found out it had done 800,000 miles rather than the 80,000. It was a manual, first was dicky but the rest was fine. The only major problem he had apart from the exhaust (which is expensive to replace, and so were the tyres back then) was the ECU that shut down one side of the engine, it still ran though until it was fixed.


I've wanted one for a while, although I prefer the S4, GT and GTS to the older ones.

Holly crapola, that's diabolicle :lol:, i'd have been into that 20 years ago but not now :)

From what i've gathered the mechanicals are complex but pretty hardy if looked after 8)
 
I, too, was interested in owning a 928, until some research changed my mind. They are beautiful cars, but according to owner reviews I have read, they will eat you alive with maintenance costs. I know you said you could handle the labor yourself, but remember that when you buy parts for that car, you are buying parts for an $80,000 car, not the used price of 10-15K. I was attracted by the low price of these cars used, but I am not willing to pay for the parts that wear out at the prices they cost. A few years ago a friend had one and needed to replace the fuel tank-it cost $900.00! A new clutch for one cost around $1000.00 just for the parts! So instead of buying a 928 I ended up buying a couple of Corvettes ( '65, '88) to slake my NEED FOR SPEED. This worked out better for me, as the parts for Corvettes are much cheaper, especially here in the U.S., where they are manufactured. Pat
 
I had an early series one a few years back. Nice car but can be very expensive when they go wrong. Buy the best and set aside a generous amount of money per annum to keep it in good shape and you won't find a better car. Buy a dog and try running it on a shoestring and you will be swinging from the rafters within a year.
Also don't forget to look for rust- yes they were galvanized but so was my compost bin and it's fooked.
 
I know a few 928's notably an S4 and a GTS and 2 things were expensive to fix for their owners.

First is a common problem area: the fitting and fettling of the "torque tube". Basically the shaft that connects the 300+HP V8 up front with the gearbox in the back. It appears all to easy to get it wrong and is costly to fix. If you google "928 torque tube" there's a host of information out there, some of it labelled "Saga"

Second was a problem my friend with the GTS had, don't know if it is common but defo costly to fix. The radiator set up in his car had the oil cooler for the (auto) gearbox run in a dual core set-up with the main engine coolant radiator. When he felt the gearshift was "off" inspection showed that coolant had leaked through to the gearbox oil side. In short corrosion of the complex oil channels had killed the auto box. Ouch. Don't know how long he had waited to inspect, but obviously "too long"

Found the Torque tube saga :shock: , big job but not beyond my capabilities, interesting thing i found on the site says the early 16V engines are safe if the belt goes (later 32V's are not) but a member posting on the forum says some 16V's are safe and some are not :?

RE-DrS, recon i'll need 3K on top of the 3.5 - 4K value of the Capri, this will let me look for an early 928 at 4-5K with a grand to 1.5K for mainainance and repairs.
