Anyone own/ed a Porsche 928 ?

Thinking about buying one next year, will probably be selling the Capri 3.0S i have and the 928 is next on my list of cars to own.

I served my time as and was a mechanic in the 80's/90's and have been spannering on cars for years so maintanance should'nt be a problem.

Had a shot of a 1984 S2 in the mid 90's and it was superb 8) .

I know the GTS is the ultimate/fastest but i prefer the pure form/look of the early cars.

Budget will be 4.5 - 5K, will be looking for an S1 or S2 one (idealy nice S1), i know the timing belt is critical (and 7' long  ) and not to buy one without history, the exhausts are expensive and to look for electrical faults.

Any other advice/things to look for ?

the radiators (aluminum I believe) are prone to leaking and since they're expensive and hard to find, owners will try various ways of stopping the leaks (usually without success). Overheating obviously leads to other things so be careful. I've always wanted one of these but I want a manual and almost all worthwhile ones out there seem to be automatics. Here's a couple of sites with some good info from owners and folks that know:

Cheers for that, and the links

I believe 80% of them were autos so manuals are pretty rare, i dont mind an auto though.

This is what i'd go for, S1, Teledial wheels, check seats, no rear spoiler or side mouldings, maybe not in brown though :D , silver or white would be ace.

Reminds me of the 928 in the movie Risky Business - that's where I fell in love with that car. It was just so different from everything else out there at the time, and that was 1984 - it was REALLY REALLY different from everything else when it launched in 1978. Hope you find one in good nick - service history is everything with Porsches. Maybe you'll luck out and that show Wheeler Dealers will work on another one and sell it on for a good price. They seem pretty thorough and competent when they recondition an older car.

That car had'nt been used for ten years yet there was no mention of the timing belt   , still a nice job though, as much as i like Teledials i'd have kept those BBS rims on it 8)

bad news when those let go too because the valves and pistons try to occupy the same space at the same time.

How about this one in ebay :D

Seriously though, my Dad had a white S2 many years ago, it was an awesome car, it did have it's problems, mainly because we found out it had done 800,000 miles rather than the 80,000. It was a manual, first was dicky but the rest was fine. The only major problem he had apart from the exhaust (which is expensive to replace, and so were the tyres back then) was the ECU that shut down one side of the engine, it still ran though until it was fixed.

I've wanted one for a while, although I prefer the S4, GT and GTS to the older ones.
