Anyone heard of a Kona Kai?

This popped up on eBay -- google reveals no bike of this name, although there is a resort in Malibu called 'Kona Kai'.

So is this a refinished bike with custom decals? Or a long-lost one-off extra-special custom frame (yes, unlikely in the extreme).

I could be wrong and I'm sure a Kona expert will chime in but looking at the geometry reminds me of the early to mid 2000s Cinder Cones, Fire Mountains, Calderas etc but the graphics seem to be a bit earlier (particularly the crmo one). Honestly they're nice frames, ride well and look good built up (as you'll know judging from your signature list lol) but certainly not for that cost unless you also happen to be called Kai and have an affinity for gunmetal.

You make an interesting point re the decals. The crmo decal is a 'jungle' style graphic and the top tube has a 'splat' style graphic, which I don't think would have appeared together on a real Kona.

Did Kona ever use the brace for the rear disk mount like that? Has the look of an owner upgrade - especially with the rack/mudguard mount position on the dropout. If it is the latter, that could explain the mismatched decals and colour.
