Anyone got experience of 1x8(or 6/7/9) builds?

1x9

Running a 1x9 on my Kilauea with a middleburn uno c/ring on front with no probs at all

Feel with modern 9 speed 12/34 rear cassettes more than a front is hardly necessary other than for excess speed downhill. I use a 34 99 percent of the time and although have a granny ring. but no big ring, I rarely use the granny if ever.

That's why I changed to a single ring set-up due to where I ride. On another bike I used to run a 42 front, 11-34 on the back but the knees started to hurt too much on the steeper climbs :( Now it's 34 front, 11-32 rear.

Just offered up the rear wheel to the frame and unfortunately don't like what I see :( seems fine from 1 to 6 but 7 and 8 are pulling the chain across just a wee bit too much.

As stated previously it's a stylo chainset on a gigapipe BB (external bearings) and I always thought that it looked like it had a wide Q factor and now seeing it with a chain running from middle front to 8th I think that I was right.

Ho hum...maybe need to replace the modern junk with something more appropriate (old :) ) for the chainline.

I had a 1x8 setup for a year, didn't think about it too much but only unshipped the chain once in all that time (including riding it at the Real Ale Wobble).

For what it is worth I think b/b length is important as is having a correct length chain and a rear mech with a decent spring although I definitely did not think it through when I set it up and just used what I had (I was only doing it as the left hand thumbshifter was dead). I also tended to stick mainly to the middle of the cassette by preference which effectively did away with chain line issues - actually perhaps that is it, shift to the middle of the cassette when going over very bumpy ground when you feel that the chain is more likely to unship?

Summary - there's no secret, but equally no reason why it shouldn't work with what is to hand, just try it.

Edinburgh bikes courier model is set up in the manner your thinking. Ive tried it myself, works ok but you need some way of keeping the chain on the front ring. An old front derallier works fine for me or a tensioner like a daves chain device. Alternatively a bash guard on the outer side and a clamp on plastic spur designed to stop chainsuck is a good solution all which can be found in bike shops, web etc.

I had a nasty one at glentress a while back on my then vintage ridgeback when the chain came off the single front ring I was running and then tangled and mangled my rear mech and bent the hanger. A painful lesson was learned that day !!!!!!!

Gears for Glentress though are a good idea, see you there maybe !

Cheers

Awright, looks like general consensus is that bb length, chain length and ring type all have a part to play in keeping the chain on. Also a front mech, bash guard, down hill chain thingy or DCD type of thing will make sure of not unshipping the chain.

So, ring is a good un, chain can be shortened, got a bashguard and can't do much about the bb length. Don't want a front mech or down hill chain keeper contraption and so the missing link appears to be a DCD...which leads me to...does anyone have one for sale? Preferably a proper DCD in black or silver but as beggars can't be choosers and I'd like to sort this as soon as possible I'll consider anything.

I've got a Ging/Mr Control tensioner in my tool/spares box. The same as on legrandefromage's bike. It's only been fitted, had the chain run through it, then took it off and put my DCD back on cos I prefered the look of it.
£10 posted if you want it

That's exactly what I was thinking Mr. hendrix, are you perchance bringing the E3 to the Glentress meet?

Maybe, the rear shock is blown on the LTS :( , but i dont fancy getting my fillings shaken loose going downhill on the E3 so going to try and get the LTS sorted.

Funny you should say that, on my Revo Courier i had a mega fall to earth on my way to work last week :( not really off road more bumpy old road, i didnt realise my chain was gone got back on the power stood up and no resistance, weight transfer to the front, and then the Continental city contacts, hadn't enough city to contact and slipped on leafs! :( dropping me like a sack of spuds. bums. still not sure if i broke my rib or not, 2 weeks on, nearly feeling better.

It has a little plastic thing to nudge the chain but needs a mech or a chain device i now realise, I have only just fitted a new short chain and short mech off my Identiti aswell, if i was to stick with the 8 gears i'd be best to follow the advice here, but TBH I have lost confidence in it and 1 gear will do here pretty much so an order to londonfixieshop and on-one and i'll be SSing my second bike 8) not worth the hassle when theres no hills here. Plus it makes the Courier a truer Courier city bike.

The Identiti was alright, no slip probs at all, but I think I'm gonna be selling it so experimenting with it and a bit of weight loss won't hurt!!
