Never quite fathomed the "Morrissey/Smiths = depressing" generalisation either; lots of dark and/or quirky humour in there ("I lost my bag in Newport Pagnell", anyone?), not to mention a generous handful of Round The Horne references in "Piccadilly Palare" [1].
