Love the fat chance tandem

DAWES Double Edge 1993

Kirbdug
I had the 95 or 96 version of that, 653 frame, hs33, xt, 800 grip shifts (hmmmm, they worked well). Took it all round the peak District, lakes, ny moors, dales, across Ireland.

Scared many a solo rider with what you could get it down. Impossible to go over the bars! Harder to get it up stuff, unless you had a run up!

Final sprint back to the shop after the club run was always a foregone conclusion. Winding it up to 40mph for the last couple of miles usually makes sure of that....

Re:

I've had this one at my place for the last 5 years or so-it actually belongs to Gary Fisher and it has a custom paint job by one of his ex's, Caroline, with weird religious references or something and two tone metal flake paint 8) -it's fitted with HED Downhill wheels and slicks and mostly XTR group...

One of the three built. GT LTS Tandem. Photos from Glacier Nat'l Park, the Tetons, Bitterroot 300, C&O Towpath.
Just brought it in as the weather's changed. Time for a full strip down and overhaul. New BB's, chains and chainrings.

To the previous poster....if you want a tandem I'd highly recommend buying one that's complete. If you start with a frame by the time you acquire all the tandem specific items such as cranks, stems, chainrings and maybe wheels you'll be passed what you could have purchased a complete bike for. If you plan to keep it vintage Sugino is the only company making decent tandem arm sets with square taper. If you're going to resto mod it to more current cranks you'll be spending 5-700 for cranks alone. At least half of the older tandems currently listed used probably have a thousand miles or less on them. I've purchased three that were 28-30 yrs old and never spent more than $300 for the complete bike. I've had no serious issues with any of them including the wheels and spokes. Have a done a number of fully loaded 5-6 days trips on them. 2 broken spokes in 10 years of tandem riding. Neither time when carrying loads.
