Any moped experts here?

I'm looking to buy a moped for summer commuting. Don't want to spend a huge amount. Should I go old Japanese or newer Chinese (are they any good)? I'm happy with old and tatty to be honest. I learnt to drive in 1988 so have moped on L plates on my licence - I assume that still applies? I won't need any CBT? Anything else I need to know?

I would look at electric assist on a normal bike. It really is coming on in leaps and bounds at the minute.

Don't go too cheap though.

sure its the same 50cc and ride on a car license without cbt.

i ran a aprilia sr50cc back in 99 for 3yrs, never ever let me down and £3 to fill it

park it anywhere for free and £15 tax and cheap insurance. ideal.

Getting the spares for some of these chinese, Tiwanese etc bikes can be a problem. I bought a new peugeot scooter thinking because it is a big company spares would be easyier to come by. Turned out the scooters are nothing to do with Peugeot. It is another company that pays to use the name. I had to scrap it after 4 years and not many miles because I could not get spares.

but if you get a 50 you must de-restrict it (probably will be allready)
as its the (common sense) law

you could but a sixteener special ,fs1e/ap50/tiger cross ,a better bike
but more cash
think you'll still need a CBT tho

Get a Yamaha .
If you buy used make sure it hasn't been derescricted or 'tuned'.
Get the lowest mileage one you can find.
I'm pretty sure that even if you've got the entitlement on your licience you have to do the CBT. In which case you'll be able to buy my nice 2006
100cc 4 stroke Honda
If you buy an Aprillia SR50 make sure it comes with a spare fuel pump, and don't try and charge the battery, with it still connected to the bike, because it will fry the ECU :?

I'd get an FS1-E DX...yellow with Yamaha block pattern. Best moped I had...much nicer than my mates AP50.

Heinzmann stuff is excellent, very high quality and readily available spares. I would buy one if I needed one.
