Any ideas who made this?

Old School Hero
Hi everyone,

Have recently purchased a 1950's Hercules bike, with a Ken Rigets trike axle conversion.

However, to comply with a bike needing two brakes, a previous owner fit a front hub brake. The last owner was told it was a 1940's tandem hub brake, but that was only hearsay.

Anyone throw any light on it?

Regards

Mark

The brand is "Exceltoo" - a French company from St Etienne. As well as bicycle hubs, they also made hub brakes for Solex mopeds.

The front hub looks like a tandem hub, large flange and 12 g spoke holes.
There used to be several ways of mounting 2 caliper brakes on the front.
I sold several similar new conversions from The Holdsworthy Co. in the 1950s.

I have 700c qr fronts but not a 90 oln was thinking that you would hard pressed to find one and it maybe easier to change the forks. I could look at reducing the axle width if you get desperate let me know how you get on

Re:

I measured the existing hub, which is this strange 90mm. I tried to put a mountain bike wheel inwhich just about fits, but I needed to stretch the forks a little bit.

The mountain bike hub though did seem as though the nuts next to the cones were thicker than on a road wheel (if that makes sense)
