Just noticed one or two posts today by female members here - wondering how many of you are out there? What bikes have you got? What do you like about the whole retro scene? Are you re-living days when you lusted after bikes inthe shop window that you couldn't afford then? Former racers? Dragged into it by partners? Bike-widows wondering what it's all about?

It would be nice to have more female members attend the meets. We're not scary (for the most part :D ), certainly not fast and generally a pretty welcoming bunch. Come and join us. Tell us about yourselves.

I am a female member. I found this site whilst searching for information on M-Trax.

I used to really big into mountain biking, cross country and a bit of trials. Sadly I have been out of the scene for a while and the body isn't in too good a shape.

So I have re-joined a gym and I am looking forward to getting my fitness up and going for long rides again 8)

Sadly my M-Trax got stolen  (I loved that bike) and my replacement was a Dawes LX (I guess you could call that old now - circa 1998) just isn't the same. Aluminium frame doesn't seem to have the same feel and the top tube isn't long enough for me.

It was a shame about M-Trax really. They were quite good bikes, but it was ridiculous that the Raleigh management allowed the reputation of their brand to be so destroyed that they couldn't even sell things under the Raleigh Special Products label and had to invent the name M-Trax instead. And they still had a less favourable reputation than they deserved because of the Raleigh stigma.

I'm afraid you might struggle to find a replacement M-Trax like the one you had BITD, as there don't seem to be all that many on eBay nowadays. But if you've decided that a 90s steel frame is better for you than aluminium, then you've arrived in the right place. And you like a long top tube relative to length of seat tube, do you? Sounds to me like a Kona is called for. The Orange Clockwork and C16R are also excellent lightweight steel frames that are in plentiful supply at reasonable prices.

As far as the females I've made bikes for are concerned, light and comfort have definitely been the watchwords. So apart from a good-quality frame, you need to look for hand-built wheels, kevlar tyres, light forks like SIDs, carbon bars, that's where the weight comes off, not so much on drivetrain components. You might well find you end up with a bike you like even better than the M-Trax. Needn't cost you much either, the 98 Explosif I'm riding around on has cost me £250 and you won't find a much better bike anywhere. That's the beauty of retro.
