on steel, sort of, it will corrode it (we use is for pickling welds)*, but it's much slower than aluminium reaction.
*slowed even more my the alloy agents added to make the steel, so dependent on the grade.
Any chrome? removal experts? Or 'how do i get this stuff off please'?

Paint the spider black 
It looks to be a fairly specialist/potentially hazardous job, perhaps one for a specialist.
There must be plenty of people who have rechromed early pace forks for that dream no's build. How did they do it I wonder, or did they just paint black and add a 531 sticker

I read somewhere on Google that bleach would do it.
It (the bleach) looked like it acted the same as oven cleaner.....
But, frankly i lost my nerve after 5 minutes and gave the spider a good rinse.
5 minutes in bleach didn't touch the chrome.
The problem i have is that there are a few small patches of exposed aluminium - i'm terrified that Hydrochloric or HCL (don't know what it is, but it sounds really cool.....) will eat the (exposed) aluminium before all of the chrome is removed.
I'm erring towards asking a sand blasting person if that would work.....
