You know the kind, say a £75 supermarket bike up against a £750+ bike, showing the benefits (or not) of spending plenty on quality equipment.

Surely there must have been somebody who has done these kind of tested to destruction comparisons.

I vaguely remember it being done around 2002-3 in a mag but really cant remember now.

Just fancied having a look really but can't find anything on the interweb.

The CTC magazine did an article a couple of years ago, took a £50 BSO and a second hand £50 MTB with predictable results.

i remember the raleigh activator 2 or something getting thrashed down a word cup down hill course and other similar stories in MBUK years ago.

to be honest, its down to the rider, within reason.

id say todays £400-500 bikes with a good rider will keep up on most terrain as any bike that cost 2 or 3k.

when you look at £80 full suspension bikes with disc brakes at supermarkets, thats when you know......thats a rubbish bike.

For an everyday rider I am using an old Jamis Dakar, not an expensive bike but one that, with the gear I have on it, is up there with bikes I have paid several thousands for, but then again it is all down simply to geometry and that is not unique to Jamis.

With full suss bikes the frame material and all that is less important so cheaper can ride better than expected given the right parts.

As long as the geometry is sound, and they are not too heavy.

I can't ride something costing 3k around generally, because I like to be relaxed.

I love cheap.

:)
