Anti-MTB diatribe from 1993

That's moderate, with more than a ring of truth about it, compared to a lot of the MTB v horse v Rambler animosity which was so rife BiTD...

A fun read, loved this

Perhaps he's also not as anti-MTB as he pretends as he does advocate Ringle hubs and a Grafton b/b which aren't exactly stock on your average Colnago......

Nice read. But I don't want to sterilise myself and crush my prostate and have the greater risk of beibg decapitated by a tree branch on a racer through a wood when I can have a comfort ride and be able to survive and actually enjoy the day on an ATB.

I'd love to see him ride over the snow-covered ploughed field I rode yesterday on his road bike.

And was I riding a super carbon fibre full-suss 2013 spec dream machine... er no 20 year old rigid MTB just bought for a tenner !

I wonder, he didn't mention how it was like in the wet?

Actually it's not 'anti-MTB' and it's not a 'diatribe,' but at least the year is right...

...it's just a tongue-in-cheek dig at people who fall into the 'All the gear, no idea' trap; and let's face it, he has a more than respectable list of credentials behind him.

Also, every time a drop-bar MTB appears on the Forum there is plenty of collective pant-wetting in response so what difference does wheel size make?

The multi-lap unicycle riders at MM would probably concur...

Surely he's just arguing the case for cyclocross bikes? Had cyclocross started in 1993?

Cyclocross has been around donkeys years. I can remember seeing stuff on the TV back in the early 80s.

Yes, but was it actually called Cyclocross back then? Anyway, I think it only started to have a great level of popularity in the US from the mid-90s. I was just wondering whether the author was arguing the case for cyclocross in ignorance of the fact that it was already out there.
