Another Sun Manxman on the road

Bought as frame & forks + headset so no intention of restoring to full 50’s spec.

Fair bit of paint missing, visible rust and rubbed decals, obviously had a life or two already.

Washed, rubbed, bits of rust treated, some paint touching up. Then repeated.

Bit of polishing…

Period Williams chainset, Brooks saddle, Brampton pedals, Mafac centrepulls.

80s/90s Campag hubs, MA40 rims (700c). SunTour Accushift thumbshift (works well with 13-32 Hyperglide copy freewheel).

Giant (Mike Burrows design) stem.

Great ride.

EDIT I changed handlebars after initially putting it all together. Now realise need to put on longer rear brake cable!

If you don’t already know the age, the first letter on Sun and Parkes frame numbers tells you the year it was built. Should be stamped on the dropout.

Had forgotten I’d seen that



So, 54/55

Had assumed that was ‘55 ‘season’ but some possibly built year before’.

Saw a suggestion it referred to financial year.

Steerer marked M 27 - presume ‘forks for Manxman, 27 wheels’?
