it's probably a 106mm spindle which was the stock one on the 96 Adroits, to be used with the XT M737 cranks. those are microdrive cranks with a 42t big ring and they are more low profile than most 110mm BCD cranks. what cranks are those you found?
i am running XTR M900 cranks with 46/36/26 rings on my Pulse which is the same frame except for the head tube. it also has that 106mm spindle installed. i had to move the spindle 2 or 3mm over to the drive side otherwise the rings and the crank arm would not clear the chain stay.
the crank you want to use might be lower profile but still, 46 and 36t rings would not perfectly clear the chain stay. too much risk of chain suck. if you want to use smaller rings it may work. but the XT M737 cranks would be most trouble free to use.
