Another headset dilemma.

the problem with action tec forks.. they feel sh,te! yeh they're stiff & lite, but the damping is rubbish. just my 2p ;)

slacker angles handle better, get used to the longer travel fork & you'll love it in time; therefore no headset worries ;)

different, not always better :)

that alpinestars would DEFFO benefit from a longer travel fork to slacken it off. but yeh not all bikes do.

the steeper is better mindset is kinda outdated, esp when you ride bikes like the new ASR with 69deg head angle & realise how fast that sucka is!

They have gotten a whole bunch better over the ten years or so they've been makng these. I rode a brand new set 18 months ago and was impressed, sure they're not Fox, but hey this is a 15 year old alpinestar- the lack of damping will match the wiggly rear end (if its a estay)

Thanks for all that info and suggestions fellas. I've had a sleep on it and decided to go with a standard hope or chris king aheadset. It is going to affect the geometry by another 10mm or so, but i'm just going to have to live with that. I've emailed the shop I bought it from and explained the situation and that i'd like a swap not a refund. Sit back and wait time.

Ok took a 1 1/4 inch threaded headset to my LBS. Explained that I needed a Aheadset to replace it for a 1 1/8" fork steerer. We took a look at some chris king Aheadsets and those looked far slimmer than my threaded headset. We measured the old threaded headset and the diameter of the cup internals (ie the bits that get pressed into the steerer tube) as 36mm.

If a standard modern is too slack what next can I try?

Designed for 1.25" threaded.

Think I might of cracked it. Found a chris king 1.25" devolution in the states. From the tech data it's correct to my headtube diameter of 36mm. Claims to change 1.25" headsets to accept a 1.125" steerer. I though that these devolutions only came in 1.5" to 1.125" but seemingly if you search deep enough they are about.

the "original" devolution was from 1.25 to 1.125. the 1.5 came much later.

i have a black devolution ahead in really nice condition for sale if you're interested ;)

cheers, carsten

Yep, I was going the 1.25-1.125 Devolution route until I decided to shim the headtube. To be honest, I still might. Aspire Velotech is the way to go if you are buying new.

Carsten, how much are you looking for?
