Another Dyna-Tech owner comes forward...

Cagey

Retro Newbie
Hi Everyone!

Glad to have found this site. Nice to know that there are (some) folks out there with a fondness for old Dyna-Techs.

Mine has been sat in my parents garage for the last x years, and yesterday I finally got 'round to taking it away and bringing it to my work.
Managed to break their garage door in the process, but that's another matter....

Anyway, my bike, bought and paid for by me when I was 13 or 14 is an Encounter, I believe a 22" (I'm lanky, and was as a teenager...), 2060 tubing with the curved top tube.

I'm wondering where I can go with the bike - it's now almost completely stripped, just need to get myself tools to remove the crank/BB and rear cassette and I'm there.

I've ultrasonically cleaned the front and rear mech (Deore LX) and they don't look to be in too bad condition - however, I'm thinking of replacing certain other bits like the brakes, shifters and possibly the chainset (BB is a definite). Would I be able to get hold of any shifters compatible with the 7-speed mech, or should I just replace that too?

The frame itself just has a few scuffs and scrapes, nothing major (probably as a result of it being dropped or carelessly leant against walls when I went to our village shop for my next sugar hit), so it's not really in need of a respray and I can't see any cracks(!) Incidentally is there potential for any problems with the bonding when the frame goes into an oven?

Any thoughts that you may have on how I should go about re-building this bike would be much appreciated. I only intend to use it on the road TBH, as a less intensive ride than my Orbea road bike.

Will try and post a couple of pics of the frame up asap.

If you made it this far into the post, thanks a lot!!

K :)

Hello, let me be the first among many to welcome you and your ultrasonic cleaning machine to the forum
Many dyna-techs here as well as other Raleigh ti frames[such as my Torus :D ]
Yes its bonded[if there are lugs present] and baking it after painting would prob' be a bad idea,as it may loosen the said bond
You will get all the advice you need [and more],if you want to rebuild it back to it's original shiny spec, many peeps here will have the parts you need and they will usually be in very good condition
Post pics if you can

welcome to the site. pics would be cool.

there is no real formular to rebuilding a retro bike (well to some there probably is!)

some try and rebuild how thew would have wanted it back in the day, others get stuck in and get it in a rideable state asap, others restore. all produce ace bikes.

check the for sale section and ebay and you wont struggle to find 7 speed shifters.

always had a soft spot for dyna techs.

welcome and enjoy

 It's here at work, and it normally has motorsport components in it, so thought I'd make use of it.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

I'll definitely stay away from a respray then, although I'm sure I've read other guys with Dyna-Techs having them done.

And will check the classifieds for OEM parts.

I'll get pics up asap.

welcome from another newbie :-)
I had a Dynatech Sentinel BITD - loved it to bits. Not seen one of the bigger ones with the dropped top tube in the flesh - good luck with the rebuild :D

Cheers.

Will aim to get a couple of pics up this weekend - work has been manic so dealing with the bike has taken a back seat.

OK, got some pics: :)

Any opinions on the corroded area shown above would be welcome. Hopefully it's nothing serious...

I've decided to put it back together with as many of the original parts as possible. So far I think I need a new BB, headset, saddle + post, pedals, brake/gear levers and h/bar grips. Removed some onza bar-ends, but don't think I'll put them back on.

Will keep updating here. :)

Now that *is* a tasty mountain bike. :D
Love the sticker.
RE the corrosion,I just consulted a mate and showed him the pics, (he is an aircraft engineer working with metals a lot) and he reckons its oxidisation, no cure but not necessarily damaging, just polish it up till it's shiny. Be aware that it may go a long way into the tube so get as far in as you can.
Hope that helps
Stu
