alot of freeview boxes are already scrap.

What pisses me off the most is that I have some quality FM recievers yet the digital cack on offer for sale is rubbish.

Exactly. Are we supposed to scrap really nice bits of gear and buy some crap instead? I guess we are!

Of course - we're supposed to apply this very same logic to bicycles, remember

Oh yeah, I forgot...

One common theme that seems to run thru many of the digital decisions that have been made in the past 20 years is "short sightedness"....
  • I remember when in the nineties when BT was pushing everyone to connect to the internet using ISDN, even though those "in the know" were pointing out that this "new" technology had already been leap-frogged by telephone providers in other countries who were using ADSL to connect people.
  • Last year, my broadband connection was really unreliable and when a BT technician came out to fix it, he found an oxidised connection on my phone line. I observed that new-build houses wouldn't have this problem, seeing as they would probably be connected using fibre-optic cable. "Oh, they don't use fibre-optic on new builds", he said. "No-one's prepared to pay for that". "So what do they use?" I asked. "Copper cable, same as you".
  • Freeview always seemed to me to be a half-arsed way to get digital TV signals. The Freesat system should have been rolled out straightaway, but instead, we were all encouraged to buy Freeview boxes for years before the Beeb and ITV realised that a dish is a more reliable way to get a TV signal.
And now it looks like it's happening all over again; "DAB" is being pushed upon us instead of "DAB+". More short-sightedness.

seems just another way to lever cash out of our pockets

"LPs, sir? Ooooh, the world has moved on to CDs now...."

"Videos, sir? Ooooh, the world has moved on to DVDs now...."

"Analogue TV, sir? Ooooh, the world has moved on to Freeview now...."

"DVDs, sir? Ooooh, the world has moved on to Blu-ray disks now...."

"Freeview, sir? Ooooh, the world has moved on to Hi-Def now...."

I bought a DAB radio about four years ago and it doesn't work. We live in a steep sided river valley and there is no signal. Same with the TV- we had to get Sky- hundreds of channels of shite and they still havn't got our phone line working 10 months after I started paying for it.

What really bothers me is how will I listen in my car with its 36 year old Becker radio? If I can't listen to the radio ihave to listen to the engine note and that makes me drive too fast!!

just take the shields off your HT leads and turn you radio on - you get a nice buzz through the speakers that way - at least I did in my A40.

We still don't have freeview digital telly on my side of the town - I don't live in the sticks, I live in the 5th biggest city in Scotland ....no Scotland isn't the sticks!

We're all going to ditch our freeview boxes, and TVs with DVB receivers in, so we can get HD aren't we?

Yes, you will need a new box for HD, but the SD stuff will still work for SD broadcasts.
For a DVB TV, all you need is the HD box.

I don't quite see what you are cross about with that, other than complaining that your LP doesn't fit into a CD tray.... :D

you are missing the point somewhat - its the equivalent of stopping the sale of 26" innertubes and 700c tires - in other words, it leaves a lot of perfectly good equipment redundant.
