Analogue radio switch-off

We currently don't receive digital and frankly when the switchover happens, I'll be genuinely surprised if that situation changes, even with the promised upgrades to local transmitter. Telly included

I think (hope) a lot of this is Gordon going off on a little power trip. He wants to be able to say, "OK, my policies as Chancellor and PM took us into the worst recession since Noah was a lad, but look at our digital world. No other country can boast... etc, etc"
I had been toying with the idea of a DAB for a while but won't now if I feel I'm being forced into it.
How about cars? Can the technology cope with moving around?

I don't think so, because this is a European wide initiative, the whole of Europe is switching to digital TV by 2012 and FM is being switched off European wide, except they are getting DAB+ apparently.

At my Dad's place analogue TV has already been switched off, only digital he can get is Satellite, thee is NO freeview reception whatsoever, so the other tellies in the bedrooms are redundant without forking out for extra sky boxes subscriptions, dishes for freesat or whatever.

I cant see it happening for FM, I think there would actually be some proper opposition to a 40 year old Roberts losing R4.

Its got to be one of the least environmentally sound projects EVER (capitals no less) it shows that my personal vocabulary simply doesn't contain the the words to describe how idiotic it all is.

They'd better not. :( If and when I return to live in the UK, I want my BBC Radio on FM not crappy old DAB. Radio 3 and to an extent, 4, sound fecking awesome through a dedicated roof antenna and decent tuner. Better than DAB ever sounded, that's for sure. Why do we have to go backwards all the time?

My last car had a DAB radio and it was rubbish. Could hardly listen to any of the stations as the reception was so bad. Ended up just listening the FM stations and my CD's.

Suffice to say when I changed cars I didnt bother getting one with a DAB radio set up.

I really can't see DAB being fully adpoted in the UK.

Hopefully someone with a brain will come along and do what Finland and others have done.

Either that or they will start making radios that are capable of receiving DAB, DABv2, DMB, yadda yadda.

I imagine that all the early adopters will end up having to bin their DAB sets.

We're all going to ditch our freeview boxes, and TVs with DVB receivers in, so we can get HD aren't we?

alot of freeview boxes are already scrap.

What pisses me off the most is that I have some quality FM recievers yet the digital cack on offer for sale is rubbish.

Exactly. Are we supposed to scrap really nice bits of gear and buy some crap instead? I guess we are!

Of course - we're supposed to apply this very same logic to bicycles, remember

The digital tv reception where i am is poor to say the least, soon i will have to to buy a new wireless as well, probably to get a worse reception, great. :(
