Why are these all gates? Did only extremely tall people buy Couriers?

I think back in the day we were all buying bikes that were far too big for us. I got my Raleigh Chinook when I was about 14 and it still wouldn't fit me today!

I think they were using road bike fitting guides. My first ATB had no standover clearance at all.
