Amp B4

Hi Guys,

In the for sale section at the moment is an AMP B4 frame, forks and disc brakes.

BITD I lusted after one of these but they were well out of my league :cry:

Can somebody fill me in with a bit more info about them, are the discs mechanical, I guess that they are. How much travel does the suspension have. The frame on this one is 51cm C to T, how would this relate to a 'normal' shaped frame, 'cos 20" would be way to big !

If I bought one it would need to be able to cope with 2 or 3 rides a week, would this be practical in terms of consumables etc.

Hi there, I've had a good look at them too, for the same reasons, they were really something bitd. And they remain the original Horst Link bikes.

IIRC the disc brakes are a funky combination: mechanically actuated hydraulics in the caliper,

Cannot comment on the daily rider feasibility as I haven't owned one (or ridden for that matter). But from searching the web it appears to me the parts supply is OK. But there are reviews out there complaining you need lots of them, mainly shock rebuilds. What type of riding do you do and are you hard on your gear? There's an upgrade to a Risse air shock that gets mentioned too.

Hi, I had a candy red one Bitd and i wish i never sold it as it was the best mtb i ever had! :cry:
Only a couple of inches travel so really only Xc use but enough to cushion the worst bumps.
You could interchange the seat stay assemblies to give different sizes & i never had to change the bushes in 3 years!
Go on go for it! if i had that type of spare cash thats the one i'd go for and not the hardtail Kona i'm looking at!!!

Consumables are not a problem, AMP still carry most of the spares for them.

Travel is limited by todays standards, but they are still a good bike, alot of the problems people had were down to the fact that they used them as downhill bikes :roll: they were designed as XC machines. I've been running mine since new (1995) and it still runs well.

They are technically tougher than the B3, but have less travel. The B3 has 3'' (75mm) and the B4 has 2.75" (70mm). The B5 has 5.0" (125mm)!!
They are great cross country climbers, and make very light bikes.
I have one in its mock build stage in the 'emergency man cave'.

Sorry the picture is poor (it's on my phone), but detail build will follow when I'm happy with the projects components.

IIRC Yep try to get a Risse - mine (B3) blew its shock at the most inopportune moments ie coming down from the malvern's bomb hole / 12 mile s from a pub etc. Deffinately a flexy flier XC bike - not for my hang on and hope stylee. The B4s are stiffer and I'd still love a B5.
