The first episode of a new podcast called Timelock went live yesterday. I was asked by Gated Recordings to run it, so it was super-fun to do and a real pleasure talking with Sophie. Even if you don't know her music, she's super interesting and an all round wonderful person. Anyone who produces and edits podcasts for a living - super respect :? :lol: Episode 2 will go live next month and it features an equally super-cool guest.

Would be interested to read of your 10 most influential tracks that bedrock your taste today - I would imagine the radio format has you necessarily looking for breadth rather than replaying 'classics' ad infinitum. I find that I have repeatedly acquired music that I 'should' like through being progressive in looking for new-to-me music, but I wind up moving most on more often than not. Success rate is probably less that 50%. What percentage of tracks you play on air would you say are 'keepers'?

Good question. It's something me and best pal have chatted about over the years, especially since both of us are hosting regular shows now.

In my view, banging out the classics is a well worn and very boring path. There's plenty of people doing that with varying levels of execution quality. Like any art, making a niche is where it's gets interesting. Whilst there are plenty of electronic music stations and DJs out there, it's such a broad spectrum that carving out a spot and developing it is possible.

It's taken years to get to this point and it's evolved all the time but I do follow a few "rules". At least 80% of New Seeds should be new music, released in the last 12 months. Complementary tracks have no rules other than they should sound right. That's filtered through to guest mixes but is loosened a little to 1-5 years old, especially with the Takeover for Reform.

Like you, I probably keep about half of what I play new. It's got to have some longevity to it. Singles are fine as single tracks on a hard-drive but LPs will get shifted if I don't go back to it within 3 months. So, maybe over the course of the year, 30-40% of the music I purchase will stay. (That said, I need to be much more ruthless to make room).

On another note I'll be back in the studio this Monday for the first live show at bloop since the evening of lock-down. It'll be New Seeds 4th birthday which means 2 hours dedicated to an artist/group. This year it'll be Air :D

Here's a fact for you. The money Air made from the remix of "Home" by Depeche Mode paid for most of the equipment they used for "Moon Safari". So we've a lot to thank Dave, Fletch and Martin L Gore for.
