Seriously, there is no excuse for that as far as I'm concerned. If they expected people to pay good money for their alu frames they should have at least designed them to cope with a branch to the mech. Just another good reason to get an Explosif I guess.
I think it was only just becoming common at around that time and Kona were often slow to keep up with trends - like not putting disc tabs on hardtails until 2000 for example.
I hadn't noticed that - the 94 Kula had one as well. Strike out my earlier suggestion then, it must have been something about the tubeset they used in 97.
