A future project i have in the"when get round stack "is a 1980's Holdsworth fast back .
I am planning to build it with Camagnolo Nuvo/Record parts .
My dilemna is that i do not want to use a 52/42 chainset . To bigger gearing for me now .
Apart from TA/Stronglight what else was there at the time that was suitable for lower gearing .

Ideas please chaps.

130 BCD Shimano of that era hould give a smaller inner ring, there was also a smaller BCD from Sugino marketed under the Apex range which looked quite smart, if memory serves Cippolini had some for sale a while ago, mind you my memory is not what iut was :). Are you OK with a triple? Some of the Italian chainsets cfame with a ring bolted to the spider arms.

Re:

Thank you for the ideas Shaun . I am off to Manchester cycle jumble on Sunday . Selling off a pile of parts with any luck

I will have a look to see whats available .

You could also look for Victory/Triomphe as they went lower but the rings might be hard to find and of course a bit later than your other parts.

Mark.

I like the idea of one of these . Not to fussed about it not been quite period.

The smallest ring you can fit to an old Campag Strada 144bcd chain set is 41T. A modernish aluminium Campag of 135bcd has a smallest ring of 39T. Shimano 130bcd road is only a marginal improvement at 38T. Do not expect to necessarily find Campag rings at these sizes but TA or Stronglight will usually have them.
See if you can find an old Campag Gran Sport chain set. This has a bcd of 116 giving a smallest ring of 34T.
Another good option is an old Stronglight set which uses their unique bcd of 122 with a minimum ring size of 36T. Very stylish and well made sets which often are found unbranded but marked made in France.
I would not worry too much about finding rings for these obsolete bcds. A bit of internet digging will usually find them often made by a German company Gebhardt.
Apart from these or the TA route your other path is a triple with an inner small ring down to 28/30T.
When you have found your chain set do not think your problems are over ! You now have to find (or fiddle) a front and rear derailleur to work them.

Re:

Thank you gents,some good ideas here . Resisted Strong light crank arms at Manchester today as i did not have my T A chain rings with me to check sizes . {Only purchased a set of pedals}

Front and rear mech should not be a problem as i have a few to play with.
