Got to keep busy, the lack of ingrained grease and cable splinters can drive a man crazy. The jan/feb storms meant I could do no more than surrender the latest frame and fork to the powder coaters and wait.........

Once back from the coaters I got busy cleaning, selecting and generally rustling up some parts to bolt on. Most parts are ready but this build hasn't been without it's hic-ups. The stem(with integral cable feed) has something down there, perhaps an old ferule that isn't going anywhere. I tried to drill it out but the size needed (4mm) snapped so i opted to leave it alone and fit a cable hanger, adds some ano brightness if nothing else.

I took this frame and fork from a member on here and i could see the potential from day one as the coating was simpler. The obvious trouble is the two colour system. Most coaters won't entertain tricky applications but once they were convinced the decals cover the union of colours they got busy...

Alpinestars cro-mega LX

As it were....

plus some bits...

The coaters will do multi colour but, you end up with this...

Not a problem, the decals naturally cover the union...

A mate of mine and brother on here professionally lacquered the frame and fork for me. Some of the decals are quite delicate and i need peace of mind that this bike can withstand, well, yorkshire!

I took some time this afternoon to get some kind of 'bike without wheels' thing going on. Some aspects of the build slowed me up so i'm sat still now until i get the wheels finished off and brake levers sanded down and cleaned up(now tatty black) I intend to just strip the black off and polish up somewhat, the lever blades anyway.

This is where i am.

This isn't a catalogue mimic, more of just getting it up and running with period correct gear and whatever i can find with 'LX' after the model number :)

more soon...

Nice!
I think an elevated stay cromega is definitely an itch that I need to scratch, had an Almega DX BITD but they seem too prone to cracking

Is this the one i think it is Marc, looks ace either way, its amazing the difference a fresh splash of colour and new decals can make!!

Hi spudly, if it's the crusty one chris had, then yes, this is it!

I was concerned over some excessive ferric although a poke round with a flat screwdriver proved the rust was cosmetic. Also i made sure the BB threads were sound before taking the frame to be coated.

By friday there should be some more bits attached to it. Braking system and front wheel at least.

Looks like a great start to the project.

I built one exactly the same for the missus at the end of last year.

Do the photos make the paint seem more red or is it my screen? The OG colour is really PINK

Thats ace, it was a bit of a trusty crusty before, but now the ugly duckling has become a swan, amazing!

Yes, quite right mate, the colour to the eye is 'light red'. I went for that as i knew it would fade eventually and the best match the coaters had without going dusky pink, sort of baby lotion colour.....

In time, it will be pink although it ought to stand up to the elements better than cellulose based paint.
