Al Carter found in my friends garage!

Purple Helmet

Retro Guru
Whilst waiting for my friend to finish pumping up his tyres before our usual Sunday morning bike ride I decided to have a nose about in his garage...

"What's this bike hidden away back here?" I asked.

To which he relied "Oh, just some old ancient mountain bike, the seat post is stuck so pretty useless"

It was an Al Carter with full LX groupset, with a rather nice deep purple carbon effect paint job. Looked in really good condition (apart from the stuck seat post). I've asked him to take some pics and email them over so I can put them up here.

So based on the description has anyone got any exciting info on this bike?

Top of the range Emmelle or Townsend bikes I think. There's very little historical evidence for the existence of Al Carter, many suspect he was just a brand name for one of the mass market bike manufacturers who caught onto MTB a bit too late and wanted a slice of the pie...
That aside some were well equipped dx/lx/xt 531 frames so very nice but not boutique if you get my drift. If you've found a 531 frame then you've struck gold, solid dependable, ride it like you stole it gold... Well done enjoy

There's a quite amusing thread on here with a 'discussion' about the merits or otherwise of Al Carter bikes.

I have one - tange double butted frame, dx kit from 91/2. Nothing special but perfectly decent

My mate picked up one of these with DX. Black Panther I think. We both agreed with the above.
