So speed plays don't fit the two shoes that do.
You're posting instead of PMing, so this comment won't make any sense to anyone but me.
Well I'm glad you pointed that out.

The two show styles that fitted me well were recessed cleat mtb or touring shoes that won't take speedplay cleats?

Correct.

However, if you ride in touring shoes, then you will have to fit at least one pannier bag, and should, strictly speaking, grow a much longer beard.

Road shoes and pedals.
  • 3 bolt look fitting is the standard, this will take 99% of the road cleats/pedals on the market.
Two exceptions:
  • 1. Some (speedplay) have some issues with the bolt pattern and need an adaptor/special cleat. Or you can get a funky 4 bolt sole to direct mount the speedplay cleat, these are generally eyewateringly expensive.
    2. A small number of shoes take a two bolt/shimano SPD cleat as well (shimano mostly)
You will not get a proper road shoe with a recessed cleat box.

Touring/MTB shoes and pedals.
almost without exception these only take a two bolt SPD cleat, there is no room in the cleat box for a large (road/speedplay/time/look) cleat.

Anything with a decent walkable sole will be an MTB/Touring shoe, and as such will only take an MTB/SPD style cleat.
If you are set on the shoes you listed above (all mtb style) the easiest thing to do is to get some M520 pedals, they are about 25-30 quid, will last several years, and include cleats and bolts.

Re: Advice on clipless pedals and shoes please for road use

It's the walking like a constipated duck aspect of road shoes that's putting me off them. I'd like to be able to at least retain some dignity while being dropped.

Re: Advice on clipless pedals and shoes please for road use

You ride in a bright orange jacket, wearing an even brighter orange helmet, and you are worried what you look like when you WALK?

Re: Advice on clipless pedals and shoes please for road use

I see no reason for such poorly designed single purpose silly shoes. I am not concerned about the extra aero efficiency gained by road shoes.

As for my orangeness, who should I blame for that?

Spds and slow shoes it is. How else will I reach the tea shop with dignity?

Re: Advice on clipless pedals and shoes please for road use

So after six pages of hand wringing, you return to the first and second posts on this thread.

You're a troll aren't you?

Go on, admit it, you are just a complete wind up merchant.

P.s. It has to be said that there is NO CHANCE of you not being seen in your eye blistering orange ensemble.

Re: Advice on clipless pedals and shoes please for road use

I just like to be sure.

Dave had it right on post number two then.

Thanks Dave.

And the rest who contributed, apart from NeilM, who just likes strange expensive impractical footwear. Bit like the wife.
