All I would say is you get what you pay for with shoes. Don't go for the cheap & cheerful offerings - you'll be buying again in 12 months. After trying the cheaper end of the market I got hacked off with the lack of quality, seams undoing, plastic cracking etc. I went the Sidi / Look route and it's a great combination, but it's expensive. I'd go into a store and try as many on as possible.

http://www.on-one.co.uk/c/q/clothing/fo ... road-shoes have some amazing offers on at the moment, Evans I believe will price match so worth trawling through the various websites and then getting a price match deal from Evans.

So, if I find a pair of shoes in Evans I like, will they all work with spds?

No, many brands (especially Italian) only take 3-bolt cleats. You'll be safe with Shimano shoes as they have fittings for both 2-bolt SPD and 3-bolt Look etc. Try and get the 'proper' road SPD cleat with the side 'pontoon' fittings as walking is much easier.

I use cheap double sided SPD pedals on all bikes as I find the Look type much more difficult to locate into quickly when getting away from traffic lights etc. I've had a few 'moments' with Look when my foot slipped off without engaging - which can be painful - and potentially dangerous.

Saying that, many people use Look etc. without difficulty. I suppose it may be that I've 'grown up' with SPD since first getting some over 20 years ago when they first appeared for MTB's.

Agree that it is important to try on first. I have wide feet and have to go up 2 sizes in cycle shoes.

Back from Evans (which cost me sainsburys and pets at home) and found that shimano and LG garneaux? I'm a 46. LG Montana were nice but £80 a pair in the sale..

Now you can look on the bay and know what is likely to fit.

How much are you hoping to spend.

If you buy cheap, you will end up buying again, as cheap shoes are..... cheap. You don't have to buy expensive shoes, just good ones.

I like speedplay, Jon, Kt and I have them on all our road bikes. The pedals are very light, simple and are double sided. The down side is / are the cleats, which are quite complicated to set up compared to something like SPuDs.

That said, once they are done, they are done, and the fact they have completely adjustable rotational play is a bonus for those of us with older knee joints.
