It does raise the question: where should you be on the road?

While it's OK to ride with 6 inches of the curb or verge in theory, in practice the two feet nearest the edge of the roads is often full of gravel and debris making it harder work to cycle on and increasing the chance of punctures.

On roads with parked cars, I like to stay well out, incase someone opens a car door without looking. Where parked cars are more sparse, but the road is busy, if you pull in closer to the curb in gaps you can end up stuck behind a parked because drivers won't move over to let you back out of the gap, so I stay out.
 
On the road I would normally be approx 18" - 24" from the kerb..
