I saw the same engine at Nottingham station 4 or 5 years ago. Without carriages and absolutely filthy it looked like something out of Batman- I was in awe!

My older boy (3.5) loves trains- if he saw this he'd say "daddy a Mullard!"

With all the steam and clanking I kept thinking of David Lynch and Dune.

....apart from the design flaws which didn't get properly sorted out until the mid-50s. In contrast, their LMS counterparts over on the West Coast route worked pretty much 'straight out of the box'.
