Recent purchase of a classic lightweight. Not owned a cycle of this age before and will be cleaning it and preserving it rather than a restoration at this time.

Rims =Dunlop Special Superlight.

Cranks =Gnutti Splined 3 pin.

Chainrings =49t & 46t.

Bottom bracket =Gnutti.


Chain =Brampton Course.

Pedals =Chater Lea racing rat trap.

Shifter (gears) =Simplex & similar to Simplex single D but different "face plate"

Front derailleur =Simplex Competition (LE SIMPLEX Bte SGDG; stop knob on upper shaft; metal top knob)

Rear derailleur =Simplex Tour de France (SIMPLEX JUY Bte SGDG; steel pulleys)


Rear reflector =Blumels.

Handlebars=GB (alloy, with scalloped red ferrule)

Very nice.

You've certainly got your work cut out with this one.

Many hours of spit and polish me thinks.

Not too sure about the rims. I've had a pair and they're very good but I think they would have been a French or Italian rim in the day.

Definitely a labour of love.

Good luck with it; I genuinely wish you well.

Has all the patina to make a lovely summer ride.

Wonderful project with original parts.
It fits in the middle of my period of interest.
There are many resources out there for most of the components and plenty of techniques we have acquired.

If you are looking for practical advice, I think you would enjoy reading 7VEN's 1947 Hobbs of Barbican Clubweight Build and many other old builds
and to a lesser degree you might get something from my Hobbs of Barbican 1946

If it were my bike, I would get some penetrating oil and apply to every nut, bolt and screw. Read some of the stories with a notebook and a pen close by to aid your recollection.
Reapply the penetrating oil and read some more. Repeat a few cycles over a few weeks.
Then test the fittings to see if they will yield.

Take lots of photos and post them, ask questions, evaluate and apply the answers.
And contact Mark Stevens, who has a wonderful knowledge of Gillott's.
His are in his Flickr albums.
I would think most of your components are in the 1952 Brown Brothers Catalogue, including your Dunlop Special Lightweight rims on p199.

Be in no rush, and enjoy the project.
