A question of spokes...

I don't know anything about spokes, all I know is how to measure them accurately :D

I have 72 300mm stainless steel double butted 2.0/1.6mm spokes and nipples, my question is do people reuse spokes that are in good nick or is it unlikely that they will ever be the right size?

Is 300mm a standard size for a certain type of hub, ie high flange, and a certain rim diameter or does this vary from wheel to wheel based on rim depth etc?

Anyone find a use for them? :D

Re:

It's unusual to have 0.4 mm difference in the butting . 0.2 is the norm , 2.0-1.8 for instance. It's also unusual to have 72 the same length if they are from the same pair of wheels as the rear drive side are 2 mm shorter generally . 300mm length does seem long , maybe for a mavic ma40 or something with a similar profile . Never but a wheel using all second hand spokes myself

If theres 0.4mm difference they will be lightweight race spokes somthing like sapim laser these are 0.5mm differenceso possibly Dt revolution.
I never reuse spokes personally.
As Mike says unusual to get 72 same length.

If the spokes have not been over-stressed then in theory they'll have an infinite life - I've rebuild wheels with old spokes without problems, replaced the nipples though as the softer brass threads deform.

Yep, if they aren't too old then no problem re-using them (always new nipples though). 300mm, I've got them in my front wheel, Mavic SSC and Record small flange.

Is that a 700 wheel (622)?

Hi, yes this is a sprint rim but there are so many measurements that go into getting the right spoke length for any particular rim/hub combination.

Re:

Just trying to learn about wheel building, so another question...

Is it inside Rim diameter minus Hub diameter measured across spoke holes, allowing for nipple length and thread length? And what else do I need to consider?

There are loads of spoke calculators on line. They will all ask for some dimensions from you such as ERD, drilling, spoke cross, OLD, Flange Measurements. This is what I use to measure the ERD

Re:

That's interesting , not heard of that . Would a rear track wheel have the same length spokes ?
