A new project!

Pics for Jonah! as you can see it needs a bit of work doing but it is in great condition and doesn't need too much of a clean up. Should make a really nice commute and see how much I like it from there.

If it looks like the bike that was on eBay thats because it is! These are the pictures he sent me of it and it is pretty much the condition it is in now. Luckily being local I could go and pick it up and got it for well under the BIN price :D

I actually clleaned the Marin up properly tonight. Although the decals are all peeling off making her look a little scruffy she is in very good condition generally. On close inspection there is only one small patch of light surface rust forming which is tiny and nothing worse elswhere other than general cable rubbing, stone chips, scratches and a bit of chain slap. I also took the opertunity to take chainset and cassette off to clean them and took the headset apart and reassembled it to make sure it was ok. I also lowered the stem as it had been raised higher as the previous owner was a fair bit taller than me. I also tightend the brake cables up and changed the pads allround as they were quite well worn for a set of red Clarkes ones. To spruce her up I swapped the grips for a set of red Onza Ules and put a set of anodised black X lite stubbie bar ends on. I also put a pair of DMR V8 pedals on till I can sort some DX flats or similar with toe clips on. A red Lizard skins chain stay protector has also gone on. Apart from wanting to get a set of crud catcher and flinger as she is the comute and I dont want to get too mucky on the way to work she is almost done. I have a alloy seatpost to come and a WTB SST saddle with red kevlar trim to go on. I do have some CLub Roost IDB bars but the Marin ones already on seem nice. Given her age the general components are in great condition still saying they are all original and I am very pleased with my purchase.

Sounds like you've been busy 8)

Also sounds like you've got yourself a very solid bike to work with there! Think my Marin has a little more in the way of patina than yours, then again it didn't bother me when I scratched it on a wall this morning

I have decided to strip the laquer off the X Ocet and polish the frame, although not original it will look far nicer. I think I will run her without decals though or possibly just some retrobike stickers to add to the intrigue. I am still undecided on the build for it though. I am thinking plain ally and some anodised red parts with a red accent throughout? Hopefully a new wheel set might have been sourced and a set of D521 on red Hope Ti will look great on it. I dont like the green Z1 drop off and I am contemplating selling or swapping and going for a pair of Z1 Bams which will match the colour better. I have my eye on a set of red Azonic Pyramid bars with a Pyramid polished block stem. I am now looking at 99 XT mega 9 groupset throughout although possibly upgrade to a better crank set (Racface?). I am still undecided on gears but I am thinking black or red Sachs Wavey 8 speeds could look good. Apart from that I now hav a Racface XY post and shim which may get polished to match the frame and a SDG grand prix saddle with red trim.
