Just had a look on the readers bikes 1998--> for the first time in a year of just following -->97 felt sick turned it off quick. not right in there!

:D When your body gets as old and battered as mine you may find yourself back there, spent years telling everyone full sus, was not needed, heavy and overkill etc.
Spent a couple of hours on my full sus ('99 Trek vrx) today loving it and no need for painkillers!
I know what you mean though ,simplicity looks so good. Will never sell or stop using my older bikes though,my rigid Marin has come into the living room for the winter,,,the joys of being single again!

Eventually I only see myself with one post 98 bike - a 150mm full susser for more gravity type rides

Road bike - old ones look better
Hardtail - old ones look better
Rigid - old ones look better

Thats my opinion anyway

Hmm very narrow minded to say bikes built after 98 are ugly, not right etc. Have you actually ridden any post 98 bikes or os it just blind predjudice ? what difference do you see n a bike from 97 and one from 98 that makes the the younger one less desirable ?
Let's not forget there was some right crap produced in the 'glory' days of mountain biking, possibly moreso than now......

There has been a lot of talk of 'elitism' on here lately........

Just for the record I have bikes from 89-2009 and they're all great.

I think there should be a third section!!

< 1997

1998 - 2004

> 2004

Love all the retro stuff. Enjoy the 2000 bikes, but don't like it to be too modern!!

We can argue about 2004.... :?

to answer for me i think my problem is not the looks of the bikes or the ride, which your right ive not ridden properly a 98 onwards bike. but i actually feel a little out of my comfort zone. i was obssesed with bikes during the 90s then when girls and cars and career got in the way bikes got left behind. now 15 years on i have more time and cash walking into my local bike shops which are not the ones i remember is quite frankly an uneasy experiance. theres some cool stuff on the modern bikes and some cool looking bikes and im sure they are a great ride. looking in the 98--> forum is just not for me.

dont wanna babel on but im sure theres others with the same problem with the modern era.

I see this thread developing nicely.
Someone said something about inserting a witty animated gif of someone flogging a dead horse.

I know what you mean... 1998--> = freaks...
