'96 Explosif

I've used Kurust inside the frame on some old bikes. Bung up one end of a tube, pour some Kurust in, bung up the other end and slosh it around for a while, then pour out what's left into a container. Repeat on all tubes. Neutralises existing rust and helps stop future rust. A lot cheaper than Framesaver I believe.

KURUST ADVISE

Do it outside not indoors i have always gaffa taped over the headtube seatube holes and any other holes with gaffa tape really tighly appylied
leave one hole fill with an eggcupish of kurust tape over the hole
then slosh it about upside down leave on each side for half hour or so to get in all the nooks any crannies
pour it out dont let it dry on the paint or your hands etc as it stick like a bitch wipe it with a wet cloth while the kurust is wet once dried it makes a film over everythng leave the frame upright to dry for few hours outside
then after a good few days to dry
give the bottom bracket threads a wire brush drill atachment to get the kurust out the threads and the top part where the seatpost goes give it a wet and dry so the surface grips the seatpost

Sometimes condoms or...dish washing gloves using the cut off fingers to perform the same work well too for keeping the gook in till your ready to let it go

be careful though...the missus might think your shagging about with a load of dunkies in your possession

what makes me wonder is, how the previous owner did manage to remove to original decals ? The original decals are very thin, or even overpainted. I did remove a lot of decals from various bicycle parts, but the OE 96 Kona decals are almost unpeelable.

Regarding the seatpost issue: go with a bigger flat screwdriver, covered by a cloth, in between the slot of the seattube and gently squeeze. Had the same issue on my steel RM Equipe and it works with that method.

Thanks for all the advice! Magas, the screwdriver worked a treat on the top of the seat tube. That and some wet & dry wrapped around an old handlebar has cleaned things up enough to allow me to fit my new 27.0 post.

I fiinally finished the build yesterday and took her out for a spin, and I have to say I'm seriously blown away by this bike! I've been riding a '97 Cinder Cone for 18 months which is great, but this guy is in another league! Sooooo fast...

Here are a few pics (click the thumbnails for hi-res versions):

Cheers!
