93' GT Zaskar / 93' GT Avalanche what is the difference...

Probably a obvious answer to most ...But I was wondering....

What is the main difference between a 93' GT Zaskar and a 93' GT Avalanche ?

The tubing: 6061 for the Zaskar, 7005 for the Avalanche.

Unless it's the Team Avalanche, in which case it's steel.

Hi

I have bought a Avalanche it was sold to me as a 95 Avalanche but it defo has 7005 Frame so presuming it is a 93 build ...
I will have the frame this week so can check closer..
Is there a huge difference in the ride between the GT Zaskar and a GT Avalanche ?
Always wanted one of these and this one came as a alu frame which will be polished and built up..

That's a '96 Avalanche. Decals are the obvious clue, but the single bolt mech hanger and downtube gusset are the real tell-tales.

There is a noticeable difference between a Zaskar (6061) and a 7005 frame of equal size, some say not much, in terms of the 'feel'. Nice frame all the same.

I have both here, of the same size and period. The 7005 avalanche is slightly heavier

I had an Avalanche just like yours ('96 model) and it was terrible, absolutely dead feeling compared to my '93 Zaskar.

little bit heavier than a zaskar, however the ride is essentially the same. stiff, overly so, uncompromising and harsh, and too short in the top tube.

The steel framed Avalanche, on the other hand, was a gem of a bike.

The frames are chalk and cheese. The Zaskar is US built and welded by someone who cares about the joins whereas the Avalanche is built by a bloke with a gun to his head - 'you weld now!'

The materials are different, the gussets are different and the ride is completely different, the too are only superficially similar due to that triple triangle.

Jumping from one to another and riding to work, the Zaskar frame climbs better and makes for a better bike all round.

I've never got on with steel GT's though...
