Purple Helmet

Picked this up at the weekend, bought of ebay for £21. The ad said it needed lots of TLC so was expecting the worst to be honest. The guy I got it from said he had ridden it on a short tour of Ecuador, it certainly looked like it has had plenty of use.

Mostly original apart from the saddle, crankset, front wheel and handle bars.

Unfortunately the zolatone paint work has had it so will probably need to be repainted. I'm going to give it a good clean and see how it looks under all the dirt and gunk...

I've started stripping down the frame. The seat post and bottom bracket came out with no issues. But I'm having difficulty removing the stem. I loosened the bolt and gave it a whack and the bolt moved down into the stem, but the stem isn't coming out or moving. Can't see any reason why? Any ideas how to get the stem out?

I notice the nut on the top of the headset is also stuck. I'm going to get myself a decent spanner and see if I can loosen it off. The only headset spanner I have is from a Lidl tool kit and is about as hard as chocolate money!

Thanks

Re:

Good score... a bargain for 21 bucks!!

I should imagine the stem has rusted inside the steerer bud. If it were me, i'd tighten the stem bolt up again finger tight to plug the hole and turn the bike upside down and pour PlusGas into the steerer from the fork end and wait... it could take a while so be patient.

Nice purchase buddy, I found a Team version for twice the price, liked rough but came out beautifully :)

Let us know how you get on.

Try a broom handle through the for blades under the crown & twist against the handlebars. Will still need some penetrating fluid though.

Oh & good score!
