9 speed chain on old campag

I want to utilize an early 80s Super Record chainset within a Shimano 9 speed friction system.

Will a 9 speed chain be too sticky on such an old chainset, any experience?

I run a 9 speed Chorus rech mech, Veloce 9 spd cassette and a Veloce standard double chainset with Shimano friction shifters (Dura-ace) and it all works very well with a KMC 9 spd chain (X-9L). KMC are my chains of choice as they work great, last well and don't cost a fortune. The 9 speeds work with Campag or Shimano.

I am certainly nowhere near being an expert but I can't see how the Record chainset will have a problem with the 9 spd chain...you could always give it a go and see how you get on.

Just thinking that if it was made to run six speed, the rings might be a little too thick for a narrow chain.

Other option is a nice older DA chainset.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think new chainrings are still 3/32". Isn't it the plates that are thinner on 9-10-11 speed chains, rather than the gap between the plates? Modern chainrings have all manner of ramps and funny shaped teeth to aid shifting, but I don't think the teeth are any thinner over all. You could try placing the chain in question over the chainring teeth to see how it feels.
Disclaimer: I haven't personally tried running a 9sp chain on old S.Record rings.

I've done this and it works fine. As nammonk says the inner width of the chain is the same.

Mark.

I briefly ran NOS 8-speed chainrings on my De Rosa with 9-speed and it was very noisy. A shift to 10 speed rings eliminated the noise.

So in some systems you MIGHT have issues. But just try it and see what happens.
