89 Saracen Tufftrax build

Retro Newbie
Ever since I saw a transit van screeching away whilst on my paper round in 92 and just an empty space where I left my Beloved Saracen Tufftrax, I have always wanted another one... 26 years later it finally happened!!.

I saw a lovely 19" frame and wolber rims on eBay and before long it was winging its way in the post.

I Sourced a Biopace LX crank, mountain LX levers and thumb shifters as well as deciding to upgrade the brakes to V-Brakes.

,I fitted everything apart from the Mountain LX levers and shifters as they are still in the post from the U.S.

I took it out this morning and it rides great, really surprised how good it feels.

I don't think it looks too bad and I quite like the V-brake setup. I'm in two minds whether to fit the levers when they turn up as I don't really like having to use Travel agents with the V-Brakes.

anyway hope you like it if your into old Saracens!

Looks fantastic!
Totally agree it needs a couple of period details to make it 100% but it’s worth getting right as it’s so nice :)

This is bringing back fond memories of my first "proper" MTB - a 1989 16" Tufftrax just like this. Mine had 400LX and some frankly horrid Tioga Farmer John's Nephew tyres.

It was taken off me by bigger boys on motorbikes up on Eston Hills
