where can I get some 1980's style gear and brake clear outer cables? The ones with a translucent coating showing the silver coil inside. I've found plenty of the braided type but this is not what I'm looking for. There are some original shimano 600 ones on ebay but they look like they're going for silly money.

think twice, I had some BITD. The silver coil started rusting in places leaving the outer transclucent looking mucky yellow/brown in places. They also did some with the inner coil in alloy. These kink and break easily. If its for a garage queen, it'll be ok, if its for an all weather road bike, I wouldnt recommend.

thanks for replies, most helpful. Won't be taking me bike out in the rain much so shouldn't be a problem, I'd keep them well lubed too.

I had a Raleigh with translucent outers on the brake cables but they developed various splits and cracks; problem is that for some reason (presumably due to various additives) coloured plastics often have more "give" in them than clear/translucent ones and the latter are more prone to cracking as a result.

yeah i'd also give em a miss.. they just dont stay nice looking for long enough. lube will stop the rust but will also stain the clear outer :( been there done that

as for those 600's on ebay.. watched him sell a fair few sets now for stupid money and not convinced they are 600's.. nothing on em to say it is :(.. for all we know he has a roll lol,,

that's a shame, they look great :(

What about the modern clear braided ones do they fair any better, might be stainless steel? Not very Retro though I suppose.
